THE BELVOIR ARTIST WORKSHOP

This year in my role as Artistic Associate at Belvoir, one of my major projects has been to create a program that supports and nurtures independent, emerging artists in Sydney.

Which is why I'm so thrilled to finally be launching this program with 14 participants who are in the first 10 years of their artistic career.  It offers free rehearsal space (when we're not using it), to each of the artists and the opportunity to establish a network with each other. This could develop into future creative collaborations or just a shared community for support. It is largely self directed and is unpaid, but at it's core is about a sharing of resources and ideas.

Each artists can use our space for rehearsals, showings, workshops, readings, or simply to thrash out a new idea and can invite each other or any other collaborators of their choice.

I am deeply fascinated and inspired by (and possibly even a little in love with) each of the artists that we have chosen to be in the program.  As a group they are diverse in both artistic practise and cultural background, and I am excited for what this might mean in terms of cross-pollination for the community.  And as these artists share our space with their individual networks, we can in turn be helping to support a greater section of the independent arts community in Sydney.

The Belvoir Artist Workshop are:

Aanisa Vylet, Benjamin Law, Bjorn Stewart, Sabrina D'Angelo, Con Costi, Kate Cheel, Disapol Savetsila, Kevin Ng, Rebekah Robertson, Chris Dunstan, Matilda Ridgway, Dominic Mercer, Priscilla Jackman and Yve Blake.

Here is a great piece that explains a little about each of them.

Look them up.  They are the future of theatre.
