Thoughts and discoveries from the Auslan script development workshop for GRLZ, supported by Create NSW. In keeping with the theme of the year 2021, we began open to the possibility of change.

Over multiple lockdowns, Victoria Haralabidou and I have have kept each other afloat by dreaming of many future projects, and the birth of our collaboration as ViNyl GRLZ.

During our PWA workshop of GRLZ one of the most impactful discoveries was building an ensemble who could negotiate the drama by physically connecting and engaging with each other primarily through eye contact.

How Jonny Hawkins and I discovered our mutual love for old ladies and found the missing puzzle pieces, to complement and complete our original ideas for a show, in each other.

The tension between what you say and what you do is the definition of character; but it can be alarming to realise what our thoughts are capable of and what we might merely choose not to do.

I was recently asked to travel back to London for a role at The Old Vic Theatre, as assistant director on the production SYLVIA, a brand new hip hop, soul and funk musical about the life of Sylvia Pankhurst.

My guide through this work has been more of a feeling than a thought. The feeling you get in your gut when you’re standing on the edge of something. Something so much greater than you know, and the majesty of that; sending everything else swirling into perspective. 

There is something about a road trip that can feel profoundly transformative.  Your sense of time changes. The landscape transforms around you while you're simultaneously being held within it. Some inspired thoughts on the majesty of nature, facing fears, and finding people who energise you.

Observing your environment to inform your interaction with it, embracing change and using it for creative response; so many of these principles resonate beyond their applied meaning- we have so much to learn from Permaculture!

In my role as artistic associate of Belvoir over the past year I’ve witnessed a prolific amount of theatre and here are some of my highlights!

Beautiful Tasmania.  For a few years now I’ve kept my eyes peeled for a good excuse to make it down to Hobart and check out the legendary MONA. 

Akram Khan was on telly the other night.  I just really love his work and also methodology as an artist.  His collaborations in particular are stand out and he is quite good at articulating his process.

I recently saw Nick Cave's film 20,000 Days On Earth, there were a few little pearls he dropped in the film that struck a chord with me so I thought I'd write them down.
